Yuanbao (Ancient Ingot of Wealth)
Gold and silver ingots, known as Yuanbao, literally mean “treasure of the Yuan dynasty.” In ancient China, gold Yuanbao symbolized good fortune and prosperity. They were regarded as powerful charms for attracting wealth, protecting the home, and signifying noble character.
Historically, Yuanbao were considered the highest denomination of currency. Today, people often place them in the wealth corner of their living rooms, where Feng Shui principles combine with the auspicious symbolism of Yuanbao to attract prosperity.
The Gold Yuanbao (often translated as “gold coin” but actually referring to the ancient gold ingot) first became officially recognized in the Yuan dynasty as gold and silver currency. Its symbolism remains deeply auspicious: a charm for wealth, fortune, protection, and virtue.
Yuanbao are not only believed to enhance financial prosperity but also to boost career success and academic achievement. For example, placing Yuanbao in the scholarly sector of the home (the Wen Chang position) is thought to promote learning and scholarly progress. Traditionally, placing them in sets of three carries the meaning of “Threefold Success” (三元及第), signifying triumph in studies and official examinations.
Thus, Yuanbao serve as both a cultural emblem of wealth and a Feng Shui tool for attracting fortune, career growth, and family prosperity.
